Hambleton's Herriot Country has derived its name from the Hambleton Hills as well as from one of the world's best-loved writers James Herriot.
James Herriot, alias real life vet Alf Wight, lived and worked in the market town of Thirsk for more than 50 years. It was from this quiet corner of North Yorkshire that he drew inspiration for his tales of veterinary life.
Thirsk, the Darrowby of James Herriot's books, is now home to a unique tribute to the vet and author. The World of James Herriot is based in the original home and surgery of the vet and combines technology with history, nostalgia, science and education.

Captain Cook Country, named in honour of Britain's greatest seafarer and explorer, stretches from his birthplace in Marton, through his childhood home of Great Ayton to Whitby where he went to sea.
